I’ve no idea whether the chap is innocent or guilty, but the concept of criminal defendants launching a crowdfunding campaign for their defence costs must be a new one!

It’s certainly innovative! Right up there with crowdfunding medical expenses…

At least $150,000 in donations originated from stolen credit cards or fake credit card numbers, according to Tor Ekeland.

      . . . (snip) . . .

Ekeland said the fund’s payment processor rejected most of the donations, and any money that got through the processor, from about $5,000 to $10,000, is being refunded out of an abundance of caution.

“We don’t want to take the risk of taking money that is fraudulent,” he said. “We’re not sure what is legitimate.”

      Ouch.

Would anyone be interested in crowdfunding a new Mercedes for me? Please do not allow common sense or logic to stand in the way!

Donations requested for a legal defense fund is not new. Crowdfunding is just one method. Tor Ekeland had one set up for one of his previous infamous clients in January 2013 – Andrew Alan Escher Auernheimer, also known as weev, the world’s most notorious Internet troll. Legal costs for defendants charged by the Feds under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act can range anywhere from $500K to a million.

It is ironic that stolen credit cards have been used for the donations. Maybe because Marcus is co-operating with the Feds, the black hats are hitting back the best way they know how.
