• Hoffman: Win10 version 1903 will cause BSODs in some games

Great sleuthing – and a disturbing story – from How-to Geek’s Chris Hoffman:

Windows 10’s April 2019 Update (version 1903, expected any day now) contains a change that causes some PC games to crash Windows with a blue screen of death. Not all games have fixed the problem, but Microsoft has confirmed it’s releasing the update anyway.

It’s a complex problem. We’ve known for some time that beta test versions of Win10 1903 would cause bluescreens on games that run anti-cheat programs (including, notably the BattlEye anti-cheat software in Fortnite). I always assumed that MS would work things out before they shipped 1903 — in fact, I figured that was one of the main reasons why we haven’t seen an “RTM” version of 1903 yet.

Now it looks like I’m wrong. The latest builds of Win10 1903 play nicely with some anti-cheat software, but freeze with others. Microsoft has apparently decided to go ahead and ship that way.

Interesting, complex story, well worth reading.
