For those that installed the April Office updates read on:

KB4018319 for Office 2016 or KB4018288 for Office 2013 be aware that issues have been reported by users with issues opening or saving a .xls or .xlsx/.xlsb file with charts embedded. At this time the only workaround is removing the updates.
