Disturbing results in Have I Been Pwned
If you haven’t checked your email address(es) in the giant haveibeenpwned database, now’s a good time to look.
I’m particularly concerned about an entry posted two days ago:
In July 2016, the self-proclaimed “Ultimate Source For Your Mac” website Mac Forums suffered a data breach. The vBulletin-based system exposed over 326k usernames, email and IP addresses, dates of birth and passwords stored as salted MD5 hashes. The data was later discovered being traded on a popular hacking forum. Mac Forums did not respond when contacted about the incident via their contact us form.
That ties into a report from Steve Ragan, on CSO, dated more than two years ago, on July 8, 2016, which says:
Three websites owned by Penton Technology, acquired in 2015 as part of the purchase of iNET Interactive – MacForums.com, HotScripts.com, and WebHostingTalk.com – have been compromised and their databases are now being sold on the Darknet.
Whatever your relationship with MacForums, Penton, iNET, or one of their associated companies, now would be a very good time to see if you’ve been pwned.
