The power of real numbers: Windows at one billion vs. iOS at one billion
Microsoft used to claim that it had 1.5 billion Windows users. Now that number’s down to one billion. It’s all hand waving because Microsoft has never published, you know, any numbers. Günter Born has an interesting take.
This morning Horace Dediu at Asymco published a startling graph:
Dediu, who has a remarkable facility with discerning numbers and trends, says that Apple now has one billion iOS devices in use. No hand waving. No “beeelions of people use Windows.” These are hard, cold iOS phones and tablets. He goes on to say:
The Apple A11 Bionic processor has 4.3 billion transistors, six cores and an Apple custom GPU using a 10nm FinFET technology. Its performance appears to be almost double that of competitors and in some benchmarks exceeds the performance of current laptop PCs… Currently Apple ships more microprocessors than Intel.
Gather round, folks. We’re witnessing the end of an era.
UPDATE: Dediu just tweeted:
Trailing 12 months’ PC shipments 265 million. Trailing 12 months’ iOS devices 281 million.
ANOTHER UPDATE: Sorry, folks. I’m too wound up to do any work today. ABC news just published a number for people to call, a Las Vegas “law enforcement number,” to check on the status of folks in LV: 1-866-535-5654. H/T @barbbowman. John Wink (MSFT) reports that he’s been on hold for 15 minutes.
NPR has an ongoing report.
