• On a personal note – the world is changing

I rarely talk about my travels on AskWoody, as they usually have nothing to do with technology. You’re better off not knowing where I am when I post– it’s a distraction.

    This morning is different.

I spent the night on a farm in rural southern Thailand, outside of Wiang Sa.

Three years ago, I posted from the same farm. You probably didn’t realize it. They had just picked up a3G signal, and it was good enough to get me connected to AskWoody.

This year, I’m working from a WiFi connection. The phone company has installed a land line, bundled with a WiFi router. My cousin uses the wifi connection all the time.

This, in a home with no running water, where we sleep on mats on the floor. The house is largely unchanged in the 15 years I’ve been coming here, and not much different from 40 years ago.

According to speedtest, I’m getting 50 Mbps down and 35 up working on my Nexus 6P over WiFi. The whole trip, through some pretty rural areas, I’ve been using Google Fi for 4G access.

The world is changing. For the better.
