• Windows 7 clean install refuses all updates

Here’s an odd one from RC:

I have been following with great interest your articles on Windows 7 and Windows 10.

One of our computers experienced a hard drive failure.  This PC was running Windows 7 Home Premium.  Fortunately, I had a folders and files backup.  I replaced the hard drive with a new hard drive.  However, when I reinstalled Windows 7 Home Premium from the Windows 7 disk, Windows refused to do any updates.  I got in touch with Microsoft and after 10-11 hours of their tech support they were able to systematically get the update process started.  When asked what the problem was they indicated it was a problem on their servers and that it was a known issue.  Once they got the updates started by manually installing significant updates from the very beginning of the update process for Windows 7, then subsequent updates started to occur somewhat smoothly.  Another issue that occurred is that the OS could not be upgraded from I.E. version 8 to I.E. version 11.  They eventually got that resolved as well.  Fortunately, they did not charge me for their time and effort.  All in all, there appeared to be approximately 250 different updates.

Have you had any experiences similar to this?  Do you have any ideas re what I should do the next time this happens?  Thanks a lot in advance for sharing your thoughts on this topic.

I haven’t hit anything like that*. Anybody out there have experience with it?

    * Based on comments, I should clarify: I have hit (repeatedly) problems with Windows Update taking a very, very long time. If RC says “Windows refused to do any updates” and he means “I waited on Windows Update for many hours – even a day” then, yes, I have hit that problem. Canadian Tech’s fix works great for me, as does the fix from Dalai at wu.krelay.de/en.
