• When does the Win7 scan for updates head south?

    Interesting question from PKCano:

My computers are set to Scan for updates but let me decide whether to download and install.
For a long time now, MS has been staging the coming month’s non-security patches under Optional Updates starting on the third Tues of the current month. The patches sit as unchecked optionals until the Mon before patch Tues, at which time they disappear from the optionals to show up as checked important updates when MS releases patches on patch Tues (about noon our time). This is supposedly what they will be doing in the future with the non-security part of monthly rollup, calling it a PREVIEW.

I have noticed that, after patch Tues and the application of the “speedup patch”, the scan for updates remains fast until the INSTANT MS releases the new set of patches the following month. With the release of the updates, the scan time goes back to forever. Then we have been scrambling for the next “magic speedup” patch. This month, it’s KB3185911 MS Graphics component. Sometimes it’s the kernel-mode driver. I have been using KB3172605, rollup, per Canadian Tech.

    My question is this:
Since the slowdown seems to be associated with the release of a new GROUP of patches, not just a specific TYPE of patch, is it possible that the presence of any one of the new patches might induce a faster scan?

Unfortunately, I have installed KB3172605 on all of my Win7 machines to speed up the scan. Even did so on my test machine, so I don’t have anything to test this on without uninstalling KB312605. If you think it’s worth pursuing, is there someone out there that can test this – not just speculate?
