How to scan the Microsoft Update Catalog for security patches
I’ve been trying to get this posted on the InfoWorld site, but no luck.
In response to Tom Currie… you can get into the Microsoft Update Catalog without Internet Explorer. Just click on this link:
http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Rss.aspx?q=security
and you’ll get a list of all of the more-or-less recent posts in the Update Catalog that include the word “security.”
(Can anybody come up with a more-likely search term than “security”? We may have to wait until after the security patch is posted, then use the KB number.)
You can put anything you like after the q= parameter, using a + sign instead of a space.
Full description in this InfoWorld post.
My guess is that (1) The security-only update posted today will only be available from the Microsoft Update Catalog, and (2) Microsoft won’t fix the Update Catalog in time, and (3) the security-only update will include the word “security.” If all of those guesses are correct, you’ll be able to see the security-only post after 10 a.m. or so Pacific Time today, using that link.
Note that I DON’T recommend you install it. By all means try the link and experiment if you like. But wait for the cannon fodder to install it, for Microsoft to answer (or dodge) reports of bugs, and watch here for a switch to MS-DEFCON 3 or lower.
