How to restore “Give me updates for Microsoft products”
From the I-didn’t-know-that file, reader Jim in Yakima sent in this response to an ongoing set of comments about the MS-DEFCON 2 post. He sent a screenshot, thus couldn’t post directly in the comments section. Here’s what he says:
I don’t know what the behavior is for systems other than Win 7, but unchecking “Give me updates for for Microsoft products …” will cause the “Microsoft Update” section (and that checkbox) to disappear permanently. I know since it’s happened to me. How do you restore it?
The article is mis-titled, as it should read, “Microsoft Update checkbox does not show up anymore”.
The five-step regedit solution (offered by mas2000) appears near the bottom of the page. “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\
Microsoft\Office\14.0\Common\ General” would be for an Office 2010 installation. The Dword setting for “ShownFirstRunOptin” will revert to 1 once step four is completed. This will bring back that checkbox (at least until it’s unchecked again). Convoluted, I know.
