• Apple Watch sales vs Microsoft Surface sales

I started digging around a bit and came to a startling conclusion: Both Apple Watch and Microsoft Surface sales are roughly $5 billion a year.

In a Bloomberg interview, Asymco guru Horace Dediu pegs the sales of Apple Watches at about $4 billion in the eight months that Apple Watch has been around. Previously, he projected sales of $5 billion for the first year – a number that now seems low, especially with the new Watch 2 now up for grabs.

Microsoft’s form 10-K says that Suface revenue from external customers in the fiscal year ended June 30, 2016, came to $4.1 billion. I searched high and low for reliable sales figures (as opposed to revenue) and didn’t find anything to hang my hat on.

Can anybody come up with better figures?

The fact that they’re both in the same ballpark — with Apple Watch only eight months old, and Surface now at four years and counting — just boggles my (admittedly limited) mind.
