An experiment with Win10 Pro
I’m trying to find an easier way to turn off automatic updating in Win10 Pro Anniversary Update, version 1607.
Several of you have recommended using the Group Policy Editor to set Configure Automatic Updates (Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update) to
2 – Notify for download and notify for install
I’m concerned because Chris Hoffman on How-To Geek says
Editor’s Note: This option, while it still exists, seems to no longer work in the Anniversary Update for Windows 10, but we’ve left it here in case anyone wants to try it. Proceed at your own risk.
Yet I’ve been told that the “2” setting does, indeed, block updates precisely the same way as “Notify but don’t download” worked in Win7.
So far, with the “2” setting, I have been notified, repeatedly, about available Windows Defender updates. There are annoying toaster notifications that say “You need some updates” and, in checking for updates, the only ones on offer are Windows Defender updates. When I ignore the Windows Defender updates, they install themselves automatically – all of which mimics the behavior of Win7.
With the Patch Tuesday patches now five hours away, I’ll be watching carefully to see what happens. If you’d like to turn your Pro machine to “2,” please join me in the experiment!
All observations greatly appreciated.
