Windows 10 Start button problem
It ain’t nice to fool with Mother Nature. Just got this from DD:
Suddenly the windows Start button (i.e. the flag) stopped working, but the right click menu worked, so I opened a command prompt. sfc showed a problem, and dism fixed it. Then it happened again a few days later. This time sfc ran clean and (not surprisingly) dism didn’t help.
What did? I ran ccleaner and got errors that it fixed, and everything was fine. It turns out that I had fooled with the “modern” tiles. Apparently doing this messes up the .lnk and/or .ico files. The next time the system boots it notices the busted .lnk and gives up, effectively disabling the Start button. I assume this is due to Microsoft putting back the Start button as an afterthought after the Windows 8/8.1 disaster. Anyway, ccleaner saw the busted .lnk and removed it (as it should) and everything was OK.
I thought it might help to tell in case somebody else runs into this. Apparently Windows 10 is still very much a work in progress.
