Are Win7 security updates free of “Get Windows 10” tendencies?
Good question from DOC:
Hi Woody — I’m one of those who are happy with Win7, and determined to keep it going and ASAP (as safe as possible) while keeping Win10 at bay. I vet all updates (never use automatic) and read your articles and blog for insight.
This morning I was presented with 12 “Important” updates, most of them labeled “Security Update for…” Here’s my question: Are updates labeled “Security Update …” generally safe to download? I’ve been assuming they are, and GWX Control Panel Monitor hasn’t shown any intrusions, so I rarely read the info page on them. I’m wondering if that’s wise.
Put more bluntly, is MS sneaky enough to slip Win10 files in there under the guise of “security”?
So far, I’ve only seen one “security” patch that had anything to do with the obnoxious Get Windows 10 drive — and it was just an advertising capability put inside an IE patch that, as best I can tell, was never implemented.
We’re still sitting at MS-DEFCON 2 — there’s no pressing reason to install any of the latest patches — but to answer your question, I don’t think we’ll see any more “security” patches with ulterior motives.
