• Big boost for backup software – Windows Home Server Power Pack 2 coming

Philip Churchill, over on the Windows Home Server blog, caught an interesting glimpse at a “whoops” posting by Microsoft, concerning the latest and greatest addition to the backup software in Windows Home Server.

Philip found a listing for PowerPack 2 in the original Microsoft posting for the “other patch Tuesday” – the fourth Tuesday of the month, when we commonly see non-security-related patches. Microsoft pulled the mention, but it seems pretty clear that WHS PP2 should be available next Tuesday, March 24.

I’m under NDA, but for those of you who use WHS, Power Pack 2 promises all sorts of neat new goodies, particularly with improved backup. Software afficionados take note. Stay tuned.

For those of you who aren’t yet using Windows Home Server, there’s a good overview on the Windows Home Server Team blog. Wikipedia has a fair comparison of backup software programs and their capabilities. PC Mag has posted a roundup of backup software packages and their prices.
